Joining Together to Save Young Lives
- Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens 16-20 in NYS and the US.
- According to the CDC: In 2008, on average, nine teens between 16-19 years died every day from motor vehicle injuries.
- In 2008 about 3,500 teens aged 15-19 were killed and more than 350,000 treated in emergency rooms for motor vehicle injuries. (There are no data for serious injuries as not all states collect hospitalization data.) (source: CDC)
What DERIC Needs Now
- Convene experts in traffic safety, public health, and adolescent learning to develop a strategic plan to guide the DERIC initiative that will increase awareness of teen driving as a public health priority.
- Determine promising driver's education curricula and pilot test in NYS schools. (There are no evidence-based programs.)
- Subcontract with an evaluation expert affiliated with an academic institution.
- Conduct rigorous evaluation and publish results.
- Share results nationally.
- Most importantly, we need your generous funding support for staffing the development of the DERIC infrastructure and strategic planning.
- All support received by Health Research Inc. will be used exclusively to advance the DERIC mission
